We offer several weight-loss surgery options, including the gastric sleeve and gastric bypass, which focus on limiting the stomach’s capacity and reducing type 2 diabetes. Statistics indicate that 90% of those who have bariatric surgery lose 50% of their excess body weight.
Our surgeons have advanced training in state-of-the-art laparoscopic techniques. They are supported by a team of professionals with specialized skills in weight-loss surgery techniques and comprehensive pre- and post-operative support. Our surgical weight-loss coordinator provides support throughout the process and is available to answer any questions you have.

A typical candidate for weight-loss surgery has BMI of 35-39, with specific significant health problems like type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea or high blood pressure. A BMI of 40 or higher also is a qualifying factor.

Procedures Offered
It is important to meet with your doctor to determine if surgical weight loss is right for you. Your doctor will discuss the different options, and which one would be best for you. Studies show that after bariatric surgery, metabolic syndrome is resolved in a large percentage of patients.
Gastric Bypass - Considered the Gold Standard for weight-loss surgery, laparoscopic gastric bypass (or Roux-en-Y) is a well-studied effective treatment for morbid obesity. While there are new surgical procedures for weight loss, none have the long-term data to verify results and safety that bypass does.
During the procedure, the stomach is made smaller (similar to gastric sleeve), but part of the small intestine is closed off so that food bypasses it. A new stomach pouch is created by making a small or large incision in the abdomen.
Gastric Sleeve - In a sleeve gastrectomy, also known as a vertical sleeve gastrectomy or gastric sleeve procedure, the outer margin of the stomach is removed to restrict food intake. During the gastric sleeve procedure, the surgeon removes a large portion of your stomach. The new, smaller stomach is about the size of a banana, which means the patient is less hungry and feels full sooner after eating. Plus, the surgery removes the part of the stomach that makes a hormone that boosts appetite.
From 2010 to 2018, gastric sleeves became the fastest growing bariatric surgery procedure. Gastric sleeve surgery is best for people who have a BMI (body mass index) of at least 35, which means you’re 80 pounds or more over your ideal weight.

Support Group
To learn more about support groups, call (310) 836-7000 ext. 6775. Typically, a guest speaker leads a support group discussion, which includes sharing successes and challenges, delicious recipes, and weight-loss tips to help build camaraderie and support. The groups are strictly confidential and you don't need to be a patient to participate.
Follow-Up Care for Long-term Success
As a center of excellence, we offer extensive post-bariatric weight-loss surgery support. You will be contacted by one of the bariatric surgical program specialists to assess your recovery and weight-loss management. This will be conducted at a minimum of 30 days, 31–90 days, 6 months, 1 year and every year thereafter for the next six years. In addition, on-site support groups provide support pre- and post- operation.
